SDAOA is now running all trainings using the NIMS system and ICS. This is to make sure we are all used to doing this so there are no surprises on searches. We will also be making sure all handlers have the opportunity to work with map & compass and to create a task report sheet to turn in to the Incident Commander so everyone is prepared for these tasks on a search. It is very important to SDAOA that dog handlers are ground search resources first and dog handlers second.
News: The SDAOR Board of Directors are finalizing updates to the By-lays to maintain compliance due to recent membership changes. The General Membership meeting is being scheduled for the near future. At this time elections for recently vacated BOD positions and voting for new business will be held.
Training and Membership
To train with SDAOA, see the above schedule for upcoming trainings. The Alliance aims to have a training every month, so check back every month to see when and where we will be training. If you would like to be informed of when the next training is by e-mail, please contact Jeanette Barnes at jfooksbarnes@yahoo.com.
SDAOA values a professionally trained, well-rounded
SAR worker. Our goal is to help K9 Handlers and Support Personnel attain
the highest level of training they can. SDAOA members constantly strive
to become more knowledgeable, more professional, and more qualified
for serving our community. SDAOA welcomes any volunteer who has a sincere
desire to serve the community in a professional manner by providing
assistance to bring home lost family members and provide closure. SAR
training takes a lot of consistency, long hours, and a high level of
dedication. These volunteers will need to work long hours for no pay,
train regularly and be on call 24/7.
It takes much more than one SAR dog team for a successful mission. SAR
dogs and their handlers are a part of the equation, but it takes ground
search personnel, logistics, planning, debriefing, communications, management,
and much more. SDAOA is a group of SAR people who see the value in the
big picture and the organization is looking for volunteers to train
in all aspects of SAR. It takes all of us to get the work done. If you
make the decision to join a SAR unit, and possibly also the goal of
training a dog, we will be the first to pat you on the back and to give
you support in any way possible to become a valuable SAR volunteer.
Good dog teams are needed and SDAOA is ready to help train and support
the SAR community in Arkansas.
SDAOA trains to the NIMS typing standards created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. To see the FEMA K9 guidelines, click HERE.
